I'm moving into my own place next year and desperately needed a desk so I did what all college kids do and found one for free off of Craigslist!
Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of the original desk. Just imagine the pieces here reassembled:

This solid wood desk was originally from the 50's and belonged to someone who sewed(!!!) at some point. There was also a lot of water damage on the bottom and loose parts as well as peeling veneer on the top piece. It also was in need of a paint job...

The finished product! For this side of the drawers, I used Sky and Water. Along the border of the top piece, I was influenced by the Metamorphosis series. I had really wanted to take a lot more from the original art but I found the black/pink to be pretty limiting as far as complexity. Also I had forgotten to print out pictures before I started and didn't feel like leaving the project to look any up. That is why in the picture below there is checkers instead of chess (oops...)

Birds!!!

A better picture of the bird detail.

The top! Here you can see the asymmetry of the piece.

The back of the desk, which has a shelving unit that will probably be covered by a wall in my apartment.
There are pictures and details of he steps on my journal, but this is basically what I did:
First I enlisted the help of my dad. My dad is always building things, so it was good to have an extra set of hands as well as access to all of his hardware stuffs. He helped a lot with the initial dismantling of the desk, as the pieces were glued as well as held together by screws. Then we glued and clamped loose parts and threw out what was damaged.
After that, I puttied and sanded the surfaces of the desk for priming (and got to use my dad's sander, huzzah!). After priming, I drafted my design and painted it. My dad again helped by building new parts to replace the ones we threw out and then we put it all together. Voila, a hot pink desk a la M. C. Escher!
