Cleaning Thrift Store Pillows for Craft Use

I have a bunch of fabric I'd like to make pillows out of, and I think it might actually be cheaper to buy thrift store pillows and cover them than to buy truckloads of polyfill.

But I get a little squeamish at the idea of used pillows. Any suggestions for how I would go about giving them a thorough cleaning without ruining them?
