FINALLY, a finish

Okay, so it’s not any of the three quilts that I’ve been working on for what feels like months (probably because it has been months!); but yesterday, I had about ten hours to myself and decided, instead of working for ten hours on something and still not having something finished to show for it, I would start a project that I could finish in the allotted time.

There were a number of things I wanted to try, but was thwarted in all my attempts by not having enough of certain solids in my stash (time to go fabric shopping!); so I shopped my stash, coming across a half yard of fabric that was in a package of gifties given to me by sonnetofthemoon.

I have always loved the cool cats lounging around and on mid-century modern furniture and accessories, and they’re in my favourite colour palette, so I decided to set myself a challenge of using only that half yard and one other colour or pattern to make the quilt.

I decided on this solid blue, and conceived a judicious layout *heh* . To best use the fabric I had to fussy cut it which made the ½ yard even smaller - I wished I’d had just a fat quarter more so I could have added a couple of more blocks



But I loved the challenge. In the end, I didn’t have quite enough of the blue and ended up having to trim the quilt top to accommodate my lack of backing fabric (!) and not only ended up with a smaller sized lap than I usually make (51” x 63”) but failed in my challenge and had to use a black cotton damask for the binding.

However, I like the way the binding frames the quilt, so let’s just say I did that on purpose. M’kay? *s*

P.S. - I actually hand sewed the binding on this time (I never do!) and didn’t like the result any better than a machine sewed binding. I also worried about it’s durability and so, in the end, I sewed another seam around the binding with the machine, making the process about 4 times as long as usual. No more hand sewing!
