fixing zippers?

craftgrrlIf anyone can help me, I know it's all of you:
I bought a pair of pants years ago and on like, the second wearing, the zipper suddenly stopped meshing and I found myself at an event with a fly I couldn't close (very embarrassing). I never got rid of the pants because I really like them, but never figured out how to fix the zipper. So my question is: is that possible? And in any way where I'm not going to have to worry about it undoing itself again? Or should I put in a new zipper (can you do that?)...? Or are the pants trash?
