modifying bookshelves

Need some help on this one. I'm moving into a smaller house soon and I will have a much smaller living room. Right now I have four book cases that are about hip high. I want to make them into 2 tall bookcases by staking one on top of the other. I know that I need to stabilize them so they don't fall over...Suggestions? I want it to look nice so I figure I can paint over them after to make it look like one piece? I'm open to ideas. Help!!!!
