Fabric painting fluffy things?

craftgrrlHas anyone ever tried painting kind of fluffy or felt-like material with fabric paint? I've got a pair of slippers that need some drastic tweaking and I don't want to wreak them but I do want a design on the front. So does the fabric absorb too much paint or does in not get into between all the little hairs and look crappy? Should I stick to sewing things on or just go ahead and paint them?
