dying cotton yarn?

I know that animal fibers dye pretty easily but does cotton? I work at Jo-Ann's and we just got all this Bernat Handicrafter Cotton in a few weeks ago. I want to knit a mat to throw down in my room after I rip out the carpet. The problem is that they don't have any colors that I would like for my bedroom, but they do have white. Anyone dyed cotton before? Any tips? All people who respond to this will have my undying gratitude and lots of love and kisses.
