acrylics on glass?

craftgrrlI know there are paints for doing faux stained glass, but I am wondering if I HAVE to use that kind of paint if I want to decorate a glass bowl or something like that. Can I just use my acrylics? Is there something I should to do protect the paint once I'm done? The bowl would hold potpourri or candles, and not be used for food, so I suppose I could spray a clear coat of acrylic on it. Any other suggestions?
