shelves

i love plants and have many of them in my bedroom. unfortunately, my window-sill is ridiculously small and does not provide enough room for some of my plants. what i'd like to do is install a small shelf (large enough for one or two plants) next to my window so that they can get enough light. i'm looking for creative suggestions for making a shelf and the material i can use for it. a plain wooden shelf will be my last resort.
