Monogramming

Any info/websites/suggestions for freehand machine embroidering, mostly monogramming. I am having problems with my brother sewing machine, and I followed the instructions exactly. It recommends using no presser foot, and use the darning. I'm thinking that it just doesn't work because not using the foot? Any ideas?
