Waterproofing

Can anyone think of a way to waterproof small boxes fairly cheaply (without using a laminating machine, which I haven't got?) I'm thinking of making some small boxes to hold cutlery out of some nice papers, so I'll want to keep the design if possible. Does mod podge work? They're not going to be /soaked/, but they will get wet over time.
