Knitting woes

So I decided I'd knit my dad a hat for Christmas. Being the brave (foolish) knitter that I am, I decided to modify a very simple hat pattern (basically, knit a long, vaguely wedge-shaped thingy in k2, p2 ribbing and then sew a seam down the side to make it into a hat) and make it so I was knitting half the stitches except with two strands of yarn. Either I used needles that were too small or my gauge was off or my math was off, because I now have a 5 inch long rectangle that is WAY too narrow to wrap around ANYONE's head. Can I salvage this in any way or do I have to pull it apart and start over? I'm a slow knitter. He might get mittens instead of a hat. I think those would be faster. ::grins::


Also, this is less crafty and more thrifty, but does anyone know anything about cutting hair? My hair is curly and I want about 1/2" cut off. Can I just give my roomie scissors and ask her to go for it? What are the odds she'll make me look awful? What are the odds I'll look at least mediocre? I'm really really poor (cheap :D) and don't want to pay a stylist just to do a basic trim.

Oh and P.S. The person who posted about having a craft night in her dorm inspired me. My roomie and I are going to hold a lip balm + marble magnet making night in our dorm sometime this next month. We'll let you all know how it goes!
