hi there, just browsing around when I found this community, so I thought I'd join! horrah. :D

okay, so question:

I'm wondering if anybody could give me some tips on how to make a sew-on patch. I was thinking I could make a cute one that said something like "Hi, my name is Laura" (yeah...that be my name) that I could sew onto a jacket or summat.

for the life of me I can't find anything on how to do it XP

Ideas are much appriciated!! ♥

thank you.

Okay, so [livejournal.com profile] mckenzee wanted to watch Black Books for something like the nth time, so I put aside my reading (Colonial Fantasies: Towards a feminist reading of Orientalism) and got out my yarn and Learn How Book in an attempt to teach myself to knit for the FIFTH OR SIXTH time. I got as far as the slip knot, then realized that a) beginners shouldn't use extra fuzzy irregular poufy yarn and b) the Learn How Book must have originally been written in Swahili and then translated into English, because IT MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE. There are ESSENTIAL steps missing! (Okay, I confess, I bought it at Kmart for $1.) Then, my self-confidence lying in shards around my feet, I had to FORCIBLY GRAB the yarn from my boyfriend, who was threatening to teach himself to knit and who would probably have succeeded, being way more talented at these things (he had to help me with the slip knot, for goodness sake...he made that moment of shame ONLY SLIGHTLY better by saying, "I was in boy scouts"). Wah... Now I need to head to the store this weekend and buy shorter needles (that don't jab me in the eye) and normal yarn, then try again. I left my copy of Stitch and Bitch back in Berkeley...does anyone have a good link to recommend that has step-by-step start-from-scratch illustrated knitting instructions?! I *shall* overcome!

I have a small (2"x2") plastic pocket mirror that's flat and folds rather like a compact. I got it from Mom when she worked for a urologist many years ago, so it has a prescription drug logo on it that has all but rubbed off. I'd like to decoupage it, but I'm not sure if Mod Podge sticks to plastic very well, and I don't want to ruin it since it fits in my purse really well. Does anyone have any experience successfully decoupaging onto plastic?

Since I know a lot of you are tired of the knitting stuff & well, my beadwork isn't all that amazing (but if you want to see either, they are posted in my LJ), I'm only posting a pic of my decoupaged cigarbox purse. )

I got the hardware at the craftstore as well as the box, the papers are from my stash, the little frames are from the scrapbooking section, and the flowers are from my sewing stuff. As you can see, I screwed the hinges up a bit so the box doesn't close right, but I like it anyhow.

if i were to decoupage on a tin, what's the best kind of adhesive to use? what are the chances of it peeling off? i'm afraid things won't stick to the shiny metal surface.

i need to find some nice blank fitted hoodies for stencils and appliques and etc, but i can't find any.
i've checked local thrift stores, vintage stores, and etc, but all the ones i find are a weird boxy cut.
i haven't been able to find any nice ones in stores, and i'm guessing that when i do they'll be about 30$ each.
where do you kno of that you can get blank fitted hoodies for cheap? (preferably not some large sweatshop corporation)

I picked up a flyer for a crafty art show at UMD. I don't want to type up the whole thing but you can see the details at http://visionsinfeminism.org. Basically the deal is you can submit knitting, cross-stich, sewing, tatting, etc and get it displayed. :D If anyone submits to this show you should tell us all about it!

I shouldn't watch VH1 late at night...

I am in the process of making hundreds of those little chinese good luck stars...So far I've done about 75...Why am I making so many, you ask? Because I've decided that I want to make a little vinyl bowl out of a 45" and fill it with these little stars. Each star has been inscribed with a fortune of sorts before folded, so that when people come over to visit, they can take a star with them when they leave, and if they decide to unfold it, they will have a little fortune to read...Some of the fortunes are good, some are bad, and others are just plain funny. I've managed to come up with 150 strips of differently colored paper and not use a single fortune twice!

I've been using a quarter to indent the sides, because my thumb started to hurt after the first 60...

I also bought a pattern for a skirt, as well as some dark denim and a hot pink ribbon to accent it...As soon as I've stolen my mom's sewing machine I'll make it!

Pictures will definitely be posted when I'm done! Right now, I have to get back to folding stars...

Hi ladies. I'm not sure who or when, but I recalled someone asking where to get a hold of handles for making your own bags. You know, the wooden ones. I was at Walmart today, looking for something totally different and happened to see some bag handles hanging in the craft/fabric department. So check there if you need them.
Have fun!

I'm stuck at home all night and all day (mostly) tomorrow. And I'm leaving for South Carolina on Monday so I can't really spend my money on any craft things cause I'll need it and I always go overboard at the crafts store. Does anybody have any ideas for some things I could make to keep me busy using things I probably have around the house? Thanks in advance.

i went through a lot to make sure we had eggs and dye this year- we only had a few minutes for me to run in and get them and then we had to go to a friend's performance. we had planned on doing eggs late tonight when we got home. in my infinite wisdom (sarcasm), i forgot to get white vinegar and i only have apple cider vinegar for home remedy stuff.

i haven't been able to dye eggs the last 3 Easters and i am totally distraught (yes, i am a dork). will the dye tablets work just as well in apple cider vinegar, or should we just wait and do them tomorrow night after we get back from my godkids' Easter egg hunt?

i'm in desperate help, and i couldnt find any other community, so my apologies if this isn't too crafty, but you are all wise ladies when it comes to fabrics and such.
a while back i bought a "know your mushrooms" nintendo short which i love love love. a few days ago i was frying something and i was splattered with hot oil [nothing happened to me though]. i put some white body powder thing [sorry i cant remember the name, i'm a moron i know] on it but it was a little late i think, and didnt "dry it" on time. i washed it and the spots didnt come off. the shirt is a little faded, so the spots are dark black... i was thinking, is there any way at all to get them out now? as a desperate measure i was thinking of dipping the whole thing in oil to see if it all went dark black.. but i dont know how it may affect the letters? it's 100% cotton, if that helps.

thanks in advance :)
