Hi everyone! Even though this isn't a specifically sewing-related community, I'm sure a lot of you do sew and can help me out with this.

I work at Threads magazine as an intern, and we're working on a bunch of new articles (and maybe a special publication magazine) geared specifically towards beginner sewers. We already started a video series online called "Teach Yourself to Sew" aimed at giving some instruction, but that's just the start of it. Everything is geared towards absolute beginners, ones that have maybe never even touched a sewing machine.

One of the things I'm working on is a list of the "cardinal rules" of sewing. Things like "Don't sew over the pins" that are really obvious, but beginners might not know. So the question is, what are some of your cardinal rules of sewing?

The other question is: what were some things that you would have liked to know more about when you were first starting to sew? This can be anything from how to read patterns, to information about different presser feet. Absolutely anything you wish you knew when you started.

Thank you for your help! And if there's anything wrong with this post in terms of what can be posted here, I'm sorry!
