What are people's opinions on hand held sewing machines?

I recently had a little boy so I was wondering if I would be able to get a wee bit of sewing done whilst watching him.

A few questions then:

How easy / fast / fussy is it to set up?

What needles do they take / are they all different like regular S.Ms?

How noisy are they to run?
