Sewing machine to start?

Hey everyone! I found at Goodwill a Stichers Easy Stich table top sewing machine that has poor instructions and doesn't really work. So, my fiance agreed to buy me a sewing machine for my birthday, woohoo! The thing is, I've not sewn since Home Ec. class 10 years ago so I'm pretty much starting from point zero. I want to spend the least amount of money as possible, so under $100 because I've seen some machines around $80.

I was just going to go to Wal-Mart or Meijer to pick one up. There are two different brands I'm seeing. Singer and Brother. Is one better than the other? Is there a particular one I should get?
