felt question

Just wondering.. for those who work with felt for stuffed toys and such, do you sketch out a design first -- on paper or on the felt (and with what, pencil, etc?) or just go at it with your scissors? This is out of curiousity. I've been picturing things in my head but my felt is still laying in a plastic bag. Heh. Mainly because I'm afraid of my sewing machine at the moment because I'm not sure if it's broken lol.
