Bleaching Jeans

I want to bleach these jeans that I have so I can make a purse. What's the best way to do this? I was thinking about filling a bucket about 1/2 full with water and just adding a little bleach and letting them soak. How long should I leave them in there, though? I'm scared of the bleach eating away at the fabric.
