grommet help?

I had a really cool watch with a grommeted band, but unfortunately my boy lost it when he borrowed it one day. I've tried and tried to find a similar watch, but no luck. My question: can I buy a watch (or watches, one for each of us... ah ha! xmas present idea!) with a plain old band, and add my own grommets? I have one of those grommeting tools for paper... could I possibly use that? Any suggestions as to how I should punch the holes in the band? I could experiment, but I'd rather not ruin a watch if I can avoid it.
