Question from a newbie

When making the cute little rice warmer bags, could I hand sew them? I do not have a sewing machine and wont be able to procure one until after Christmas. If I can, what would I use (like thread wise)? And does anyone have suggestions on places/sites where I can learn basic sewing? I'd really like to make these but want to know if that's feasible.
Sorry for the seemingly stupid questions, but I'm just getting started. Thanks in advance. I love this community! Y'all are sooooo clever.
