okay, this may be a bit offtopic, but i need a crafty solution, so you girls and boys might be able to help.

it's finals week at my college, and i'm an art major. my painting class is what i'm having trouble with, because silly me can't let go of an idea she had. i was trying to work with oils, but i didn't like the look of it on canvas, and i really wanted to work with something more... built up. ideally i'd like to work with encaustics (melted wax paint).

according to a professor all i really need is wax (either paraffin or beeswax), something to warm it up with, like a hotplate, cheap brushes, oil paint to mix into the wax, and possibly a heat gun.

now, i don't have most of these things. the big problem (in my eyes) is where to buy wax, especially on a budget/time restraint (friday), and especially given that i do not have a car. i can get to a hardware store and an art supply store (and possibly but i'm not holding my breath, a walmart), but that may be the extent of it. do you think any of those things might be sold at a hardware store or an art store? i wish i were near a candlemaking store. :)

or, alternately, can anyone think of any other alternate painting methods that could give an interesting effect? a friend of mine paints with glue and acrylic paint, so that's not an option, don't want to copy. :) but if you could think of anything interesting i could mix into the paint (beyond the typical glazing mediums) to give a bit of substance to the paint, i'd love a suggestion.

again, sorry it's a little offtopic but i get the feeling you people could think up some really crafty solutions/answers. thanks!
