Hippie Jeans.

I want to do that thing where you salvage old pairs of too-tight jeans by splitting open the side-seams and adding a strip of fabric. Only question is, is it as easy as it looks or is there a trick to it? Also, would a regular machine just need a jeans-needle or would it cause my machine to scream in pain?

Just wondering...
