Fringe?

When you crotchet a balnket or scarf or anything that you want to have a fringed edge, How do you ad the fringe?
It it just a matter of tieing on pieces or yarn to make the fringe or it it stitched on somehow?

(as you can tell by the seemingly simple question...i am still new at this)
