crazy stripe hat. or something.

i was at the gap with my family today. while there, i saw this hat (part of the crazy stripe family). a square hat, pretty simple. i've crocheted them myself. and apparently, i'm not a hat person, especially since i cut my hair, but.. then this hat looked good on me. and i was not about to feed the gap money for something i could make myself.

i think the hat works well because of it's non-fitting shape. also, it was very thin and floppy (but still warm), and stretchy. i'm assuming from the look of the hat, it was done in a thin fingering/baby yarn. and perhaps i should use bigger knitting needles when re-creating the hat? (that's question #1 - should i use bigger needles? right now, i have #6's and #8's).

also.. i didn't think about this until just now, but the tassles -- how would i go about putting those on the corners? i'm assuming what i would do for the mainbody of the hat is start off with a ribbing (perhaps k3, p3) for a few rows, then do stockinette (or a p1, k1) for the mainbody of the hat and just make a big rectangle, then repeat the first few rows of the ribbing. then fold it in half and stitch up the sides. but the tassles, i'm really not sure how i would attach them -- and how to make them securely attached? any suggestions?
