can anyone troubleshoot a sewing machine?

I found a sewing machine in my garage! It was left here by the people that used to live downstairs. I just took it out of the case and it seems to have some issues. It seemed to be working at first, just slowly. Then it started to smell like... like when you use an electric mixer... Does that sound like a burned out motor? I'm hoping it's not because it would be so cool to have a new sewing machine.
