Eyelash Yarn

I've seen alot of people knitting with Fun Fur or eyelash yarns. I just started knitting, so I apologize if this is a silly question, but if you were to use that to make say a scarf (or something that would be substantial) do you have to knit with a sort of base yarn first or do you just use the eyelash yarn alone?
