magazine wallet instructions
Jan. 31st, 2004 10:33 pma few people have asked me to post directions on how to make the magazine wallet i've posted earlier. (http://www.livejournal.com/community/craftgrrl/2942653.html)
it's really not that complicated, i just freehanded it, but i'll try to explain it the best i can. you will need a roll of strong clear packing tape, and a magazine. i've used about 2 pages from a magazine, so an ad spread, or a photo that spans 2 pages would work best. use an existing wallet as a template and cut a strip of paper from the magazine that you want to use. now cut the tape and cover the paper with it, both the front and the back. what this does is basically laminate the paper. if you have a laminator, you don't need to do this obviously. now measure and cut a section slightly smaller than the first piece - this will be the money pocket. laminate it with tape, and then tape it to the original piece. to make it more secure, tape from both sides. (i really hope that made sense..) now fold the wallet to form 3 sections.
next, measure out and cut the pieces of paper that will serve as your credit card/id pockets. laminate them with tape, and then tape them down on the left side of the wallet. (or on the right, depends on where you like them to be) i made only 2 pockets, but you can make as many as you want. make sure the second pocket is a little shorter than the first, use an existing wallet as a template. for the center section, i decided to use an existing plastic card holder that came out of my old wallet. i cut another piece from the magazine, laminated it with tape, and taped it to the center section, leaving a pocket on the left. the card holder slides right in.
for the id pocket, i measured and cut another piece of the magazine page, layed my id on the backside and traced around it with a pencil. i then cut out the section inside the pencil lines. i laminated the resulting "window" with tape. since the tape is clear, it doesn't impede with viewing the id. you can also use something like a clear mylar plastic sheet too. then i taped this to the right section of the wallet, leaving a pocket at the top for the id to slide into.
it doesn't hurt to reinforce the sides and the top with an extra layer of tape if it seems a little flimsy. the wallet has a velcro closure. the peel-n-stick velcro works great.
i really hope this made sense, if anyone has questions, let me know, i'll try to take a picture or think of a better way to explain this. :)
