sewing machine help

I want to buy a sewing machine, but I know nothing about them. Right now I have a handi stitch, but I'm sure a few of you know how crappy they are. And mine has attacked me on more than one occasion.
So craftgrrls, my question is...what are some good sewing machines out there? I figured that some of you would be experts with sewing and could help me out.
