Painting wood paneling - plaid!

Couldn't find any info specifically on this, so thought I'd open it up for suggestions. My boy has wood paneling (the kind with silly vertical grooves) in his room, and thinks my suggestion for painting it plaid is cool. We're not painters, and I'm not sure how to go about this to make it look like real plaid. Anyone considered this before? Any tips would be most appreciated, and pictures will be shared when/if it's finished!

Also, any other suggestions for making wood paneling not suck (but without filling the grooves in) would be great.
