ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- As their knitting needles transform strands of yarn into colorful scarves, a dozen University of Georgia students chat about relationships, homework and evenings out.

At least 100 such Stitch 'n' Bitch groups, as they have been dubbed, have formed over the past five years in a movement growing on campuses and in coffee shops around the country.

The groups in New York, Boston, and Chicago have several hundred members each, mostly students and young professionals.

Georgia student Molly Levinson, who recently completed a charcoal gray scarf, said her knitting group gives her a place to talk about frustrations with the craft and with her life.

``We're all struggling with the same things, getting through the same stuff in college,'' she said. ``It's nice to knit as a group. You don't have to sit by yourself and feel like a grandmother.''

The percentage of women under 45 who know how to knit or crochet doubled in six years, reaching 18 percent in 2002, according to the Craft Yarn Council of America, a trade association.

Knitting lets students channel restless energy productively, said the Rev. Lesley Adams, who started Handwork/Soulwork at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in New York about four years ago.

``People really talk about what is going on with them. That's what we invite them to do,'' Adams said. ``Somebody's struggling, asking, `Is this where I belong, should this be my major, what about a relationship problem, how should I deal with my professor?'''

Debbie Stoller, who founded a Stitch 'n' Bitch group in New York City and is the author of ``Stitch 'n' Bitch: The Knitter's Handbook,'' said the groups draw many young urban professionals who may lead isolated lives outside of their hectic jobs.

``I think it's really satisfying to have something in your life that's just to do so you can relax,'' Stoller said. ``It's not about making money, getting thinner. It's just about doing something for the pleasure of it.''
