Cleaning skeins of yarn?
May. 18th, 2004 01:14 pm(I've already Googled both this community, and in general, and couldn't find anything that matched what I was looking for. Wool, yes; acrylic, no.) Knowing me, tho, I probably worded it wrong...
My co-worker was sorting through the Lost & Found box at work this morning and stumbled across a large plastic shopping bag full of yarn (acrylic stuff, mostly) and a few other "crafty" things (big wooden beads, some kind of twine, and other stuff).
It's been in the L&F box well over a year, we're thinking. Several of the skeins are sealed up inside Ziploc bags, but others are loose. Two light blue ones, for example, are in a ziploc bag, and it looks like a granny square was started with one of them.
Everything looks clean; my co-worker said nothing smelled funny (I didn't want to sniff)... the paper labels wrapped around the skeins looked a bit aged, perhaps, but no other problems.
Still, I'm a bit nervous about the thought of using it for myself, since the origin of the yarn is unknown, and I'm a bit of a germophobe... It's lots of small amounts of yarn, mostly -- half-used skeins and the like -- so I'm guessing I could make some granny squares with it.
Any thoughts on how best to clean it? (Febreze heavily, then air it out in the sunlight? Throwing it into an old pillowcase, knotting that up and tossing it in the washer? Boiling it on the stovetop? Hand-wash? Do I use a soap of some kind?)
