[identity profile] sybill777.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] craftgrrl

Hello! Long time lurker, first time poster here. I posted this one over at [livejournal.com profile] furhideandbone , thought you folks might get a kick out of it too.

The top peice is a cicada shell bracelet a la naughty secretary club. The larger rectangles below it are adult cicadas destined for the same bracelet-y fate. The round ones are shells backed with magnets, but I'm eyeballing them for dangly earrings or another bracelet.

This is the first time Iv'e done anything organic in resin, so here's what Iv'e learned.

  • Air bubbles suck, and render peices worthless.
  • injecting shells with resin before embedding them cuts down on bubbles
  • resin loosens even the stiffest of bug limbs.
  • The damn things do NOT want to stay in the way you put them (rolling to the side, etc)
  • Cicadas smell like death. I went out to colledt some and I though one of my cats had died somewhere or my pile of roadkill in the yard had exploded form the heat. :P

I made about 60 of the shell peices and 12 of the adults. Anyone got any more ideas?  These are just a first batch, I'll probably put some colored paper in there for backing next time.

I'll try to post some of the bone jewelry tomorrow.

You guys always have the most constructive feedback, I cant wait to hear what you think!
