Tying Off

I avoid handsewing as much as possible. But there are those inevitable times when it's just gotta be done. My least favorite part is tying off. It seems it takes me just as long to tie off my thread as it does to handsew whatever I just sewed. This is how I do it: make a loose knot, stick my needle into where I want the knot to go, then tighten thread around needle, repeat about 4 times. But a lot of the time my knots end up spaced away from each other. When this happens I end up tying about 12 knots, maybe more.

There has got to be a better way. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
