I finally managed to get my hands on a jigsaw, so I finished the dining room chairs. And I went and bought batteries for the camera, so now I can show you. :)

Before....

And THEN....

Basically, the process is thus:
1. Remove seat from chair (in this case there were screws).
2. Rip the crappy stuff off the seat frame.
3. Cut a piece of plywood in the shape of the frame that's left after the crap is off. You may also want to put duct tape around the edges so it won't catch your fabric later. It won't show (unless you're going to use ultra-sheer fabric).
4. Fasten the plywood TO the frame (frame to go on the bottom, and fasten back to chair).
5. Put your cushiony stuff on top of the plywood. (I used 2 inch foam)
6. Cover with desired material, leaving enough to give a little when you sit down so it doesn't rip.
7. Staple fabric to underside of frame.
8. Reattach seat to chair.
9. Sit, Ubu, sit! Good Dog.
