Goin' in a circle!
Aug. 28th, 2004 03:51 pmMy attempt at a tutorial for y'all.
Pic 1
Chain 3 or 4.
Slip stitch the ends of the chain together.

Go back in same loop you went in for slip stitch. SC by entering loop, yarn over, pull through one, yarn over, pull through two loops. Do this several times in this same loop until you have something that looks like Pic 3.

Once you have the start of a circle like Pic 3, chain 2 and start SC in every single loop as I described above. You will go twice in each loop to create a flat circle.

When you get back to the beginning where you chained 2, slip stitch the end loops of the row together and then chain up two again. This is how you will continue until the ends start to get wavy as in this pic.

When ends start to curl, after about 3-4 rows, you will have to start varying how many times you go in each loop. You can go 1, 1, 2 or even just once in each loop. That’s what I did. Going once in each loop means the edges of the circle will slowly begin to taper to form the sides of the hat that go around your head. You have to just feel it out and shape it to get it the right size and way you want it.

If the seam where you are making your slipstitches starts to form a point and look like a Robin Hood hat, try chaining up just once. (This was a problem I had…it depends on how loose your chain is).
At the bottom of your hat, you can start going twice in each hole again to make it ruffley. Here’s a link to a website that I’m assuming says kind of the same thing I’m saying, but I don’t read patterns well so I’m not sure. http://www.headhuggers.org/patterns/cpatt01.htm
I hope this helps.
