Machine thread question?

I've checked the memories and a few other resources but haven't found a definitive answer: Can you use machine embroidery thread for hand-embroidery? I'm definitely in the emergent stage of my stitching career (but thanks to Jenny Hart, I'm taking to it like a duck to water!) and would appreciate some clarification. Thanks!
