I dyed the first batch of thread today - about 140 yards.

Thread used: DMC Perle cotton #12 (approx. size 40)
Dye used: Dye-na-flow silk paint (805 scarlet, 803 bright orange, and 802 golden yellow)

Cost: Nine 1/2 oz bottles of dye for $10.79 plus $6.80 shipping (Dharma Trading)

Method: I took an old folding chair (card table chair) outside and tipped it over. I wound the entire ball of thread around 2 legs of the chair. I then used the bottle to drip the dye onto the thread, using a paint brush to help cover the thread evenly. Once it was almost dry, I heat set the dye with a hair dryer set on high.

Ease of use: The bottles have the same sort of tip you'd see on squeeze bottle fabric paints, so it was alot easier than I expected. I barely even got any on my fingers, and what did get on my skin washed off easily with soap and water.

Results: Very happy! The colors are very bright and vivid, and the thread is not stiff, crunchy, or hard from the dye.
