need ideas and assitance...

so i really like to embroider things, and i embroidered a blanket--actually, it's just a would-be blanket. i've never really sewn before, but i want to, and i'm trying to make a blanket. i've got two pieces of fabric and some batting, though i don't want to make it into a full-blown quilt. how do i sew it together so that it will last the longest and look the best??
