I HIGHLY suggest you look at the latest Threads magazine (although maybe it was September? I forget which issue my library had).

There's an article in there on how to make a sloper for yourself out of duct tape with very good directions. For those who don't know, a sloper is like a very basic pattern that records the precise measurements of a body, so that other garment patterns can be made from it. These instructions cover a hip sloper, so that you can make skirts. The author runs a business that makes custom riding habits, which often need to be close-fitting. This is her preferred method.

I am so tempted to just buy the whole issue if I can find it!
