hat sizing??

is anyone familiar with a three year old's head? i knitted a hat yesterday for the three year old daughter of a friend of mine. i knitted it using this pattern, which is for 3 to 5 year olds. my gauge was correct for the pattern, and everything looked great...until i finished it. i can put it on my head, and i'm not three to five. this is the first hat i've ever knitted, so i'm kind of freaking out about size...is anyone familiar with the average three year old's hat size?? i can't try it on the child i made it for because, as luck would have it, she lives in canada. and i live in a childless household.



the hat, by the way, was knitted on circular needles i made myself with dowels, polymer clay and electrical wire. the yarn is recycled from a thrifted wool sweater i unraveled and dyed with kool-aid (ice blue raspberry lemonade, which is the blue and strawberry lemonade, the pink).
