sterling edging?

hi gals

i'm wondering how to go about making items have a sterling edge ie here - i collect beach glass like nobody's business and i'd love to make some pendants. what kind of sterling do i use (are the wires/head pins for jewelry making FULL sterling, or just plated?), is it difficult to get it to look this clean, and can it be done with any other kind of metal (solder???? will solder stick to glass?)
