making shoes smaller?

Well, a long long long time ago I saw a lady make a modification to her shoes. I think it was that she bought pumps that were too big so she cut the back open, and somehow laced up the back with ribbon to make it fit tighter. I was wondering if that lady is still around here or if anyone else has done this? Does it work and are there specific steps that must be followed? My pumps are a little big, but at $12 half a size is quite ok. I wouldn't mind tripping once, but tying ribbon into the back would be helpful and cute.

I haven't been here in a while, and my has the memory section grown! Lovely.
