ok, while i'm burning immortal chorus cd's and doing laundry, i wanted to throw this out.
i have a sweater. it's a gift. you know the type. my husband's mom rocks. she does. she thought of me while she was in argentina a few months ago and she bought me a sweater there. a cashmere sweater even! it has a great feel... but...
it's uh, well, it's a color somewhere between salmon and pumpkin. ya. i dunno either. just. hmmm. no.
so, i want to do something with it. something = black.
google found a few things for me. i have to use celluloid dyes or blah or blah or specific natural fiber dye like: http://www.handknitting.com/natural_fiber_dyes.asp in other words, i don't think i can just use rit. can i?
also, what i found actually referred to dyeing YARN, not a whole sweater. i doubt that makes much difference really, but if it does and you know it, say something, please.
i checked the memories here and found a girl dyeing a cotton cardigan, but from what i've read, the methods/products used to dye cotton and wool are different.
ALSO... it's a little dated looking. tight cuffs at the wrists and waist with long sleeves and body so that the tight cuffs create the baggy puffed out thing.
i'm more of a bell sleeve grrrl, myself.
i'm thinking of whacking the sleeves of at 3/4 and putting a slit to the elbow, shortening the body to just below my waist (cutting off that cuff and a few good inches, too) and also maybe opening up the neck with a little slit which would expose just a bit of collar bone below the neck.
i don't think i really have to use a special hem, i've cut and hemmed knit fabric before with success, so i think that will be fine.
my question here is that i was thinking of finishing with a wide ribbon at those new hems, possibly in black to match or in red or pink to contrast. any thoughts on that?
this isn't going to be as cool as a koi vintage recycled cashmere garment, but that's sort of the inspiration.
