Help! I'm modifying a lace nighty

Hello my fellow crafty geniouses! I need some help. I bought a gorgeous lace nighty, and it used to fit fine (ok, it was a tiny bit big, but looked great anyway). But that was before I started to eat better, and now it doesn't fit at all, but its stil cute. So on to the problem: How do I pull it in along the sides to make it smaller? Can I sew it on my machine without it eating the lace, and ruining it? I already checked the FAQ's, and didn't see anything about sewing lace. Thanks guys!
