Leather Cord

I am in the process of crocheting a friend a poncho. (Think old time west; the mexican ponchos) I am using a pattern from the 1970's and to close the sides it says, "Lace sides with ski boot thongs..." Well, that is not what I want to do. I plan to use leather hank that you can by at a craft store. I am planning to make a tie on each side. To attach the leather hank to the poncho, I am planning to loop the leather hank through a stitch on the poncho and then secure it to itself. My question is, what is the best way to secure the leather hank to itself? Thanks for your input!
