Help! Buttons!

craftgrrlHello, I've lurked around in this community for a while now. I do the occasional craft, but nothing worth posting here about. You all are the most crafty people I know, you come up with the best ideas.
Recently I've seen a lot of buttons I want, but really don't have the money to waste on them. I know there has to be a way to make my own for far cheaper. (And of course, they'd be far cooler...) Does anyone do buttons? How can I get started, and what's the cheapest way? I've searched a bit, and all I can find is $100 machines that make them, and I don't really want to invest in this. I just want a couple here and there. I remember that a friend had a very cheap button making thing when I was young, and something like that would even work... Anyway, I hope someone out there has a suggestion. Thanks in advance! :)
