basic(?) hand sewing questions

howdy doody- i require some help in the hand sewing department.

i would like to do these two things:
1- sew a patch onto my shirt (you know, like boy scout style or something)
2- sew squares of fabric onto a calico bear to create a patchwork bear of sorts for my sister's christmas gift.

i really am unsure as to where to begin to find the information i require... could someone please tell me what materials i need, what i need to know, the level of difficulty, etc? step by step instructions as to how i can do these things and advice would be much appreciated.





simple for sure- i am going to create collages of images (á la iron on transfer paper) of her friends, family and interests and sew them neatly onto fabric in patches onto the bear... so it's like a memory bear or w/e.
