Revamping a hat...inspiration needed
Jan. 14th, 2005 09:01 pmHello dollies,
this is my de-lurk post. I am very much in need of help and inspration, and after having read your posts for almost a year, I trust you to help little lost crafty Goth /me out ;) .
So my favorite hat shop has a sale at the moment, and I got a hat for only 10 EUR the other day *bounces*. I adore its shape...however, the thingy has the most hideous white comic print on the black felt.
Proof #1
Proof #2
I guess you all will understand that something needs to be done to it. I really want to preserve the shape, but cover up those nasty white prints.
First, I was thinking about getting spray-on glue (b/c I am afraid or rather know from experience that normal fabric glue tends to "travel" through loight fabrics or dissolve PVC) and glueing another fabric over the entire hat. But I worry that if I glue on just one large piece of fabric, I will encounter problems with a) shaping that and b) air bubbles. The hat itself is made from one piece, so there are no seams that I could use as guidelines and cut the fabric accordingly :( .
My next idea was to dye the felt. From the feel of it, the white has been printed onto the felt; it's not integrated into the fabric itself, but won't let itself be rubbed off either. But I have never dyed felt and don't even know if that would be possible with that extra color on it...the pattern would probably still show.
I would prefer the hat to be covered in a different fabric, since I already own two much-loved felt caps. A rubber-like polyester and lots of cheap PVC (too flimsy to actually sew garments out of it) were the first two that came to mind. But then again, an entire PVC hat might just be overdoing it a little...
*sighs* All in all, I am totally lost ~ no clue how to go about covering the print up, no idea about which fabric to use. I haven't even thought about any add-ons such as skulls, roses, feathers and the like.
Suggestions, anybody? Any random thought is welcome, really. I'm stuck.
(I am sorry for looking so sloppy and worn out in the pic, but I had just gotten back from work when I took it. And one of my cats would not remove itself either ;) ).
