blue vinyl clutch + tut!
Jan. 26th, 2005 02:02 amso, tonight something inspired me to make a simple clutch. and just in case it inspired anybody else, i've included a tutorial to go along if you please <3

ingredients:
+ two fun fabrics (i chose blue vinyl and polka dots)
+ ribbon or lace
+ sewing machine (if you'd like this done in a single evening that is)
+ saliva
+ scissors, measuring tape, iron
A- cut your two fabrics to a decent size. i cut my vinyl in a 12.5"x9" rectangle, 13.5"x10" and for the liner.
B- if you'd like your flap to not be a square, cut now. i used a big mixing bowl to create a smooth curve.

C- find the center (long-ways) of the outer fabric. fold fabric in thirds and decide where the flap will be, make sure to right down any notes in reference to this. since i didn't want the bottom of the flap to meet the bottom of the clutch, i remembered my measurements and made a mental note of where i want to ribbon tie to start/stop.
D- sew your ribbon/lace/whateveryoulike to your outer fabric. if yours will close like mine, the ribbon will be sewn to 5/6 of the outer. leave extra ribbon/lace on both ends to tie!

E- press 3 edges your liner, the side not creased is the side that is not flat. if you bypassed B, and will have a rectangle clutch, press all sides.

F- make sure they are the same size (or at least really really close)

G- sew down those straight edges. vinyl has a tendancy to not do what you want at times. to avoid warping, don't sew all of the edges in one go. sew the short edge first, then the long edges working towards the open non-straight end. to keep the vinyl from sticking to your foot (if you don't want to buy a teflon foot that is), lick your finger, and wipe your spit where you need that foot to go. we'll wash it off later, don't worry.

H- now trim excess liner fabric from the curved-edge-end of the clutch.

I- sew this end closed, fold the fabric under as you go.

J- fold in thirds again, like in step C. sew shut the two open edges......

K- now it should look like this:

yay! you're done!
now just put some handy things inside...and tie it shut...

and have a night on the town!
