soldered glass charms

I am thinking about making some soldered glass charms for jewelry and for ornaments, but I don't know exactly what materials I need to make these. Other than the glass, metal tape, a soldering iron, and, of course, whatever I want to put inside, do I need anything else? I saw somewhere that someone who makes these used some kind of grinding and buffing machine. Is this necessary? I want them to look nice, but I don't want to go to all the expense if it's not necessary. I may consider buying equipment like that later, though. If I like how these turn out, I think I might try selling them. Thanks for any advice you can give me.
